PinkCat: Running in the Shade “Safety First” (A different sort of SR campaign report)

4 May, 2017

To understand what is going on here, you had best read the first PinkCat: Running in the Shade post, but short summary, this is a campaign report for our Shadowrun campaign set in NorCal through the filter of a cartoon made by one of the team members.

Episode Twenty Eight: Safety First

Guest Starring: Clawz and DD.

WhirrThe school is on a field trip to a fully automated local factory when a power surge first shuts down their robotic tour guide and then starts everything up.  So the rest of the episode is a adventure crossing the running factory floor to get to the control room to shut everything off so that the rest of the class can get out safety.  It takes cartoon liberties with scale and distance and plays off of classic exploration and adventure tropes while also having PSA-style undertone of best practices when visiting/working in a factory.  Eventually they make it to the control room and reset everything, the robotic tour guide restarts and they finish the tour as if nothing happened.

What really happened:

Up in the labWe are gathered on very short notice by Mister Li for a rush job.  A younger relative of his, a shadowrunner and hacker, is on a run gone bad; he is locked into the local matrix at a medical corporation, Venara Medical Multinational, and his team bugged out leaving him trapped.  He was able to get a call through to Mr. Li and he hired us to get him out.  Time, obviously, is of the essence.  We pile into the van and head to the target VMM building, Pink furiously researching along the way.  We had to act fast so we stopped at PartiCiti, bought balloons, hats and various other party things, a supermarket for cake and flowers, quickly modified out costume jumpsuits and the van to represent SmileShile Flowers and Mobile Celebrations.  And we arrived to brighten some poor Salaryman‘s (well, Salarywoman in this case) day with a special birthday party with hats, cake, live music and balloons.

While BB, Tohru and Bladez ran the party, Pink and Sparky took balloons throughout the building (“Spreading SmileShine!”) and looking for the missing hacker.  After few close calls with a security drone and internal locks we found him and Pink jacked in, the hacker managed to get himself tagged as a vital product file and it would not allow the only copy of it to be downloaded.  Pink hacked the system to get him out, then we stuffed his wobbly self into a spare jumpsuit and we exited.  Things were running a bit late and the rest of the team was almost kicked out by management.  But we got out and ran like hell.

Safely returning our rescuee, we got paid in both cash and a new contact, Georg, a fixer who works for or with Mr Li.

Notes: This run went better than it had any right to as Pink’s dice were so hot it was unreal and we blew past some technical challenges that should have made life much more difficult for us.
