Tuesday Magic Item – Parthenogenesis Amulet

18 April, 2017

Athena Parthenos

Voddick studied the paintings along the hall.  “The styles change but the subjects are obviously related.  A strong bloodline.”

“Indeed, the line passes from mother to daughter and has for centuries, a Matron always rules here,” said  Gollaon, running a finger along the bottom of one of the frames.

“No fathers pictured, though.  Unimportant people?”

“Unneeded,” answered Gollaon.  “The ruling line is only mother and daughters.”

“How does that work?”

Parthenogenesis Amulet

These amulets are made of ivory and gold and often decorated in repeating motifs, always of the finest detailed craftsmanship.  The source of the original amulet is lost to the mists of time, but the Empress was so charmed when she rediscovered it that she had a hundred and one of them commissioned and distributed throughout the Imperium.

The basic power of the amulet is usable by all, it strengthens the health of the wearer making them more resilient to damage (granting the Toughness feat) and disease (providing a +4 resistance bonus to saves against such).

But the primary ability is only accessible by an adult woman, it can introduce a parthenogenetic pregnancy to result in a female child.  However, to initiate this pregnancy, a spark of life must be taken, by killing either a intelligent being of the same size as the mother or a non-intelligent one, one-size larger.  This death can be ritualized or in the heat of the moment, the magic does not care, it just needs its wearer to strike the fatal bow and choose to take the spark of life from the dying being to create a new life.  The amulet helps to protect children that it conceives, providing a +4 resistance bonus to any save that might cause harm to mother or child or both, until the child is born.

Aura moderate transmutation; CL 9th

First paragraph as above.

The basic power of the amulet is usable by all, it strengthens the health of the wearer making them more resilient to damage (granting the Toughness feat) and disease (providing advantage on such saves).

The amulet helps to protect children that it conceives, providing advantage on any save that might cause harm to mother or child or both, until the child is born.

Notes: I was challenged by my wife to create an item based on Shriekback‘s song Nemesis, this inspiration comes from the chorus “Big black nemesis, parthenogenesis / No one move a muscle as the dead come home“.  Besides, parthenogenesis is an underused word.
