Tuesday Magic Item – Claimant’s Medallion

28 February, 2017

A familair face“That fellow, the one talking with the Count, he seems awfully familiar but I am sure we have not met,” said Voddick before taking another bite of sausage.

Gollaon looked across the mess hall and did a double take.  “By the Shadowed Path, he is a spitting image of Baron Danballion’s heir, Paxton.  The one that was killed in the Dark Star ambush.”

“You are right and he is carrying the house shield too.  Didn’t Paxton say he was an only child?  A cousin maybe?”

Gollaon studied the man with the Danballion shield.  “Perhaps . . .”

Claimant’s Medallion

These medallions contain a picture or image, changing to match the gender of the wearer, and have a secret compartment to place a twist of hair or other bit of body.

The medallion lets the wearer effectively masquerade as person whose hair (or other body piece) is hidden in the medallion.  The wearer gains a +1 bonus per month worn to impersonate that person and to disguise them self as that person, as the medallion feeds them memories and slowly and subtly changes their appearance to match the person.  Once the bonuses reach +12 they are permanent, but if the medallion is removed before then, the bonuses half as long as the medallion is worn again within a day, otherwise it resets to zero.

However, every three months it is worn, the wearer must make a Will save with a DC of 10 [+ the current bonus provided by the medallion] or acquire a personality quirk of the person imitated.  Every two quirks acquired, the wearer losses one of their own, subsumed in their new personality, and if they acquire four quirks, they fall sick with a fever for a day and must make another Will save at the same DC, if they fail the save, their original personality vanishes, replaced by the person they were imitating and now, are.

For D&D 5E:

Wondrous item, rare (requires attunement)

First paragraph as above.

The medallion lets the wearer effectively masquerade as person whose hair (or other body piece) is hidden in the medallion.  The wearer  after a month, the wearer gains a +1d4 to rolls worn to impersonate that person and to disguise them self as that person, as the medallion feeds them memories and slowly and subtly changes their appearance to match the person; after six months, the wearer gains their proficiency bonus to such rolls as well and after nine, they gain advantage to these rolls as well.  After a year these bonuses are permanent, but if the medallion is removed before then, the effective time it has been worn halves as long as the medallion is worn again within a day, otherwise it resets to zero.

However, every three months it is worn, the wearer must make a Charisma save with a DC of 10 [+ half the number of months worth, rounded up] or acquire a personality quirk of the person imitated.  Every two quirks acquired, the wearer losses one of their own, subsumed in their new personality, and if they acquire four quirks, they fall sick with a fever for a day and must make another Will save at the same DC, if they fail the save, their original personality vanishes, replaced by the person they were imitating and now, are.

Notes: Inspired by the endlessly fascinating case of the Tichborne legacy.  And it drifts into the realm of cursed item as well.
