Tuesday Magic Item – Heartbreaker

14 February, 2017

It will stab you in the heartGollaon paused in the cleaning of his sword and sighed.

“Who are you pining over now?” asked Voddick as he carefully stitched a repair in his shirt.

“That girl.”

“That does not narrow it much you know,” grumbled Voddick.

“The raven-haired lass with the flashing blue eye,” he sighed.

“The one who stabbed you in that brawl?  The one with the eyepatch!?”

“The very one.”

Heartbreaker

The origin of this dagger is unknown, but rumors about it have been circulating for centuries if not longer.  It is a plain steel weapon with a curved blade, unexceptional in appearance but it is warmer than the ambient temperature to the touch.

Heartbreaker is a magical dagger, it gives its wielder a +3 enhancement bonus to attack and has the keen enhancement.   Against targets that possess no emotion and no intelligence, it gains a +1 enhancement bonus to damage as well.

But against those that both think and feel, on a critical hit, the target is subject to Heartbreaker’s Curse and they find themselves fascinated and attracted to the person who wounded them.  Mechanically, this gives the person a +5 enhancement bonus to non-hostile Charisma-based skill checks targeting the subject of Heartbreaker’s Curse.  Against those that already find the wielder of Heartbreaker alluring, the curse is triggered on any attack that causes maximum weapon damage.

However, the wielder of the dagger is subject to equally wild, and lethal, swings of affection, suffering Heartbreaker’s Curse whenever they are struck by a critical hit and targeting the person that inflicted such suffering upon them.

First paragraph as above.

Heartbreaker is a magical dagger, it gives its wielder a +2 bonus on attack roll, against targets that possess no emotion and no intelligence, it gains a +1 bonus to damage as well.

But against those that both think and feel, the wielder score a critical hit on a roll of 19 or 20 and on a critical hit, the target is subject to Heartbreaker’s Curse and they find themselves fascinated and attracted to the person who wounded them.  Mechanically, this gives the person advantage on any non-hostile Charisma rolls targeting the subject of Heartbreaker’s Curse.
