New Monster – Pyroead26 June, 2016
This month’s RPG Blog Carnival is Cold Iron and Pixie Dust: Step Into The Faerie Realm hosted by Pitfall and Pixies. My contribution is something a bit different:
The dancing flames resolved into the form of a beautiful woman wreathed in orange smoke . “Welcome, but watch your step, it is dangerous for burnable beings such as you,” she says in an amused voice.

SQ fire walk, form
Fire Walk (Su) A pyroead treats fire as though it was solid ground for the purpose of movement,
this function much as air walk except for requiring flames.
Form (Ex) Pyroeads come in various forms, depending on the sort of fire that sustain them:
• Flame, gains +2 Dex and her speed increases to 40 ft.
• Lava, +2 Str, improve natural armor to +7, Resist Acid and Electricity 5 and unarmed strikes does 1d6+2 + 1d6 fire. Cooling Crust (Ex) Any cold attack that causes more than 10 points of damage slows her for 1 round per ten damage inflicted but improves her natural armor to +9 for the same duration.
• Magical Fire, +2 Int and Charisma, has SR 13 and all fire spells she casts have their DC increased by 1, Knowledge (arcana) +8, Spellcraft +8 (both of which are class skills for her).
Heat Aura (Su) the area around a pyroead is always heated by the very nature of her being, this ranges from simply warm to furnace hot. When running hot, anyone within 5′ must make a reflex save (DC 16) or take 2d6 fire damage and catch on fire, on a successful save they take half damage and are not on fire, while anyone within 15′ must make a reflex save of take 1d6 fire damage.
Spells (Su) A pyroead casts spells as a 6th-level elemental-bloodline sorcerer.
Water is Bane (Ex) Water causes damage to the pyroead at the rate of 1d4 per gallon of water to a maximum of 3d4 per round, immersing a pyroead in water will cause her 6d4 damage per round and generate a lot of steam.
Environment near constant fire
Treasure standard (only things resistant to high heat)
As dryads are to trees, pyroeads are to ever-burning flames, and their personalities are shaped by their environments:
Flame pyroeads are formed from the flames of natural gas vents that have been set alight, they are flighty and curious. They find people fascinating and love to be told stories of distant places.
Lava pyroeads are solid and matronly, they spend their time crafting lava into useful items which they trade for local news and occasionally for raw material to work with. They tend to become protectors of the local communities as long as they are treated with respect.
Magical fire pyroeads are haughty and think they know more about magic than they do, they are the easiest to flatter but also the most likely to react strongly to insults or mockery. They are often allied or friendly with whoever created the magical fire they emerged from and can be valuable assistants.
What you may know about the Pyroead:
Knowledge (Arcane or Nature) DC 21. It is a pyroead, a fae spirit of the living flame, they can be reasoned with but are often prickly. They command a natural mastery of fire magics.
Knowledge (Arcane or Nature) 27. Pyroeads are vulnerable to cold iron and water and they can walk upon fire as though it were solid ground.
Elemental specialist wizards, elemental and fae-blooded sorcerers and druids receive a +2 bonus on this knowledge check.
Notes: Inspired by Tim Brannon’s Fire Nymph, which was neat but did not quite work with the way elementals function in the Sea of Stars, so I decided to take the pyroead concept and run with it. It is not a formal category of Greek nature spirits, but it should fit in well enough with her sister nature spirits.
