PinkCat: Running in the Shade “Blackmail Bad” (A different sort of SR campaign report)14 February, 2016
To understand what is going on here, you had best read the first PinkCat: Running in the Shade post, but short summary, this is a campaign report for our Shadowrun campaign set in NorCal through the filter of a cartoon made by one of the team members.
Episode Eighteen: Blackmail Bad
Guest Starring: Clawz
One of their fellow students, a cheerleader, ask them to find out who is trying to blackmail her using photos from her in the showers at school. Investigation and comic encounter with students and staff at school follows before the actual camera is discovered and its fiber-optic cable is traced down into the underworld beneath the school. After dealing with cockroach cultists, crocodiles we finally find the mole behind it all, who is just lonely. We convince him to clean up and come to school instead of hiding. The shower pictures are destroyed and we end up with a new friend. Rah!
What really happened:
We were hired by a Chinese-American bank employee who was being blackmailed over his attendance of a Japanese house of prostitution (The Black Dragon House) which would go down poorly with his greater family, some of whom are tied into the Triads. The Black Dragon House is part of a network of businesses owned by the blackmailer, PinkCat makes sure that we will not be stepping on Mr Lee’s toes by getting involved in this and is given the all clear.
Bladez goes in on a recon mission and manages to learn some useful information while (more importantly) not getting caught. Sparky scans and monitors the building with a variety of handmade drones. Target, the owner’s office, is on the third floor and our best bet looks going through the basement where there is a loading bay connected to the underground part of a parking structure. We debated going in with the laundry or other shipments but in the end, we decide to mug a security guard going off duty during the quiet part of the day, take his keycard and use a disguise to just walk in. Once in, disable the other guards and let everyone else in. It works surprisingly well. While we do trigger an internal alarm we are able to hark or destroy the drone released by it. Sparky and Bladez loot the bar and paint gang signs while PinkCat hacks the personal system of the owner, erases the blackmail file (and sets a program to seek out any copies of it) and copies the business logs. In and out before reinforcements can arrive, all is good.
We collect payment from out employer, give the business data to Mr Lee in exchange for a favor later and he helps us to fence the stolen booze (extra money rah). End results: We trigger a minor gang war and the owner of the Black Dragon is found floating dead in the bay a few weeks later (seems he was skimming from the Yakuza).
Notes: We actually had a game in early January as well, but none of us were at our best for it and I cannot recall any details. So, this is the write up for our February session.
