Tuesday Magic Item – Ring of the Stormcalled (for Pathfinder and D&D5)

17 November, 2015

Thunderbolts and lightning“That dwarf was amazing, with the lightning dancing about him when he waded into that unit of spearmen,” said Voddick then taking a drink of dark ale.

“He has a strong link with the storm and with his ancestors,” replied Gollaon, after taking a drink of his wine.

“Dwarves are good at remembering family, that is true,” nodded Voddick.  “Glad he and his ancestors are fighting on our side.”

“As am I.”

Ring of the Stormcalled

The exterior of these rings is roughly worked and dull crystal while the interior is as smooth as ice.  Once aligned with the wearer, the crystals become clear and glint brilliantly in the light.  Forged by dwarven ritual magic that blends crystalmagy and weather-calling, this rings embody a fragment of the storm that created them.

The ring must be worn through a dawn and a sunset for it to attune itself to a new wearer.  Its constant ability is to provide the wearer with a +3 resistance bonus to saves against lightning and weather-based effects.

Thrice a day, when the wearer makes a successful melee attack they may add a die of electrical damage equal to the weapons base damage die to the strike (not multiplied on a critical hit).  Until the wearer’s next action, they are sheathed in an electrical nimbus that provides resistance to electricity 10 but also makes them quite visible and they cannot hide or conceal their presence for the same duration.

Clerics with an appropriate domain (storm, tempest, weather) or characters with an appropriate bloodline gain two advantages, first, they instantly attune the ring, second, they gain an additional use per day of the electrical damage.

For D&D5:

Its constant ability is to provide the wearer with a advantage on saves against lightning and weather-based effects.

Thrice a day, when the wearer makes a successful melee attack they may add a die of electrical damage equal to the weapons base damage die to the strike.  Until the wearer’s next action, they are sheathed in an electrical nimbus that provides resistance to lightning damage but also makes them quite visible and they cannot hide or conceal their presence for the same duration.

Clerics with an appropriate domain (storm, tempest, weather) or characters with an appropriate bloodline gain two advantages, first, they instantly attune the ring and it does not count as an attuned item, second they gain an additional use per day of the electrical damage.

Ring, uncommon (requires attunement)

Notes: Another item for the characters of the Petrichor game, I wanted each character to have a minor magic item that played to their theme.  So, the visse necrourgist got a pouch of hydra’s teeth, the communist cavalier, his oath blade, and the dwarven storm priestess, her ancestor’s ring.

  1. What I learned here is that Voddick is a beer-drinker and Golloan prefers wine. Very revealing. 😉
