New Magic Item – Veteran’s Sword

16 November, 2015

Trsuty companion“The quarter master is offering me a new sword, but I cannot bear to think of my current one being melted down,” said Voddick patting the much repaired hilt of his sword.

“Keep the one you have, it knows your hand and your spirit,” answered Gollaon, protectively dropping his hand to the his of his own sword.

“Ture, we have been through all sorts of danger and it has always served me well.”  Voddick nodded.  “You are right I will keep it.”

Gollaon just nodded in return.

Veteran’s Sword

These weapons have seen considerable use and often bear marks of previous battles, they are also well cared for and have been carefully maintained and repaired.

A Veteran’s Sword is a +1 sword whose wielder gains a +2 CMD to avoid it being disarmed or sundered.  The owner can use a free action to draw the Veteran’s Sword during a surprise round and if the did so, they gain a +2 bonus to their Initiative in the combat following.

A Veteran’s Sword is tough, having an additional 5 hit points, and easy to repair (+2 enhancement bonus to do so).

Aura faint transmutation; CL 5th
Slot none; Price 3,000 + cost of sword; Weight as sword
Construction Requirements
Craft Magic Arms and Armor, fox’s cunning, mending; Cost 1,500 + cost of sword

Notes: Veteran’s Swords should, in high magic worlds, sometime just be spontaneously created by the care and belief of the owner that their sword is something special.

Tangentially inspired by Veteran’s Sidearm and Veteran’s Day.  I had intended this to be last week’s Tuesday magic item but other thing got in the way.

  1. Ha, as I was reading the lead-in I was thinking exactly what you wrote in the notes: that in some milieux or systems they would just be spontaneously created over time. (Like, in Fate they would be an Aspect or in Burning Wheel a Trait).

    • I think more items should be just a result of long use, belief or spontaneous emergence in a magical world.
