PinkCat: Running in the Shade “Club Catastrophe” (A different sort of SR campaign report)9 October, 2015
To understand what is going on here, you had best read the first PinkCat: Running in the Shade post, but short summary, this is a campaign report for our Shadowrun campaign set in NorCal through the filter of a cartoon made by one of the team members.
Episode Fifteen: Club Catastrophe
Guest Starring: Claws and DD.
DD inherits the almost derelict Club Catastrophe from her great-uncle Hugo and decides to try and restore it to its age of greatness. DD rounds up acts and food, Pink does computer stuff and helps Glitter revamp the electrical and lighting systems, Claws does general gruntwork and gets to wear a nice usher’s uniform for the grant opening. Of course, the Club seems to be haunted (“The Phantom Rocker!”) so there is some Scooby Doo-esque ghost hunting until it is revealed that the Phantom is a derelict rock star from the 2050s who burned himself out on chips and drugs and hid out in the club because he knew all the hidden ways and codes. DD rehabilitates him and get him to preform again. The big opening goes well, the former Phantom is reunited with his long last bandmates and Club Catastrophe is on its way back!
What really happened:
The team was hired for a datatheft mission against a new transplanted branch of a Settle import-export company. The target had two buildings, a small office block and a warehouse side by side inside a plasti-wire fence with cameras and basic sensors at the edge of the warehouse district. We did basic recce, physic, electronic, web and drone overflight, while the security was not extensive, it was sufficient and all of their staff were transfers from the Seattle office, so no way to easily slip in as everybody knows everybody. Bladez steals a box off the loading dock and drops some cameras for us to spy upon the warehouse, which has slightly less security than they main building, be we are unsure if we can access the data we need through the system there.
While continuing to probe the defense of the target, BB finds a nearby vacant and semi-abandoned warehouse and we plan to set it up for a big rave as a distraction later. We find out it is owned by Mr Lee and he agrees to let us use it as a club as long as he gets a cut and we do not wreck the place. So, we begin preping for that, BB has the social skills and contacts to organize acts and refreshments, Sparky and PinkCat handle the tech side of things and PinkCat does the social media out reach, Bladez helps out with gruntwork and a bit of networking.
After finding the original specs for the target building, we decide on a dead simple plan. The club holds a big opening party, everyone is invited! PinkCat signposts the hacker inclined among them to try and steal bandwidth from the target company’s network. Fireworks are the big finale. When they start going off, Bladez cuts the fence, PinkCat spoof the security as best she can, and Bladez runs to the target building wall, cuts a section from the wall, taps into the interior fiberoptic net with a foolproof device, replaces the wall panel and runs out. Once tapped into the system, PinkCat works her computer mojo, we rip the files, and hide among the confusion caused by the club party. It all works as planned, but the target do disable the tap but not before the goal is achieved.
Then things go wrong. We arrange to meet our Johnson and trade data for money, as you do, PinkCat and Blades go to the meet while BB and Sparky wait in the van. It is in a nondescript alleyway and PinkCat hands over the datachip just as out employer’s head explodes from a sniper’s bullet. PinkCat spends the rest of the scene screaming and cowering. Bladez dives for cover and then dives for the Johnson’s body to grab the cash and chip. BB and Sparky fire up the van and floor it to come to our rescue. Two thugs with assault rifles and body armor appear at one end of the alley and Bladez drags PinkCat out the other end, dodging bullets all the way, until we pile into the van and burn rubber to get away. The van catching a couple of rounds but taking to serious damage.
We have no idea who killed out employer or why. But PinkCat will find out. No body kills someone in front of her and gets away with it.
Notes: PinkCat has combat paralysis and is almost entirely useless in a fight, which seems appropriate for a 14-year old hacker.
