PinkCat: Running in the Shade “Music Biz” (A different sort of SR campaign report)30 August, 2015
To understand what is going on here, you had best read the first PinkCat: Running in the Shade post, but short summary, this is a campaign report for our Shadowrun campaign set in NorCal through the filter of a cartoon made by one of the team members.
Episode Thirteen: Music Biz
Guest Starring: Bladez and DD.
The team is hired to rescue a musician from a sleazy music promoter who has lured them away with promises of nova stardom. Lots of classic schtick of the team trying to get into the big concert to rescue them and having to try to outwit Gorillaz Security and avoid Officer Bloodhound. Finally they get through and convince the musician to return back to where they are loved and making the music they love rather than becoming a corporate manufactured idol. End scene of the musician playing a low key club gig with all of the team appearing in the crowd.
What really happened:
We are put in touch with the Orkish music producer Thuggy-J who is having trouble with a new music start up stealing his acts. We are hired to teach them a lesson by poisoning their next music release with a virus, which should also make them look bad and hopefully shake some of the talent free. So, there was lots of scouting of the offices of the new company, and background research, as it turned out it was a very new company, the vanity project of a Yakuza princeling. Luckily, it was just indirectly financed by the Yakuza, not a direct operation by them, which made the characters much happier. Lots of scouting and trying to get a feel for the routine of the place.
Ultimately, feel back on the going in as cleaners strategy. Everyone but PinkCat gets the appropriate uniforms and hacked IDs and head in. They grab a cart of cleaning supplies and make their way to the elevator. There is a tense moment as hacking the keylock, allowing access to the basement, proves more difficult than we had hoped, but we get down before security notices the elevator just sitting there. Bladez jams the elevator to make it more difficult for security, maybe not the best of calls, but Bladez is Bladez. Luckily the server room is properly marked on the basement floor though hacking its door was difficult. The tech on duty was surprised to see us and was pummeled into unconsciousness before he could call for aid. Bladez set about pulling up terrible porn on his work display while a remote allowed PinkCat access to the system, hiding the virus planting with an attempted virtual smash and grab of financial information. Just as the virus upload was completed, a security guard came down on patrol, and was also quickly beat down, stripped (by Bladez) and dropped on the unconscious tech. Then the team bugged out, surprisingly avoiding further trouble. The virus works as planned and is then exposed, making the company look bad (and, inadvertently, giving PinkCat a small botnet) and we get paid.
Notes: This report is a bit fuzzy as the game happened before GenCon and my memory of it is equally fuzzy.
