Review – Purple Duck Storeroom: Animated Skulls

15 May, 2015

Purple Duck Storeroom: Animated Skulls provides a variety of useful and interesting options for those GM’s that wish to incorporate animated skulls in their campaign.  It is well worth taking a look at if you would like to amuse or annoy your players with an animated skull (or two or a dozen).

Purple Duck Storeroom: Animated Skulls is a short work on animated skulls (naturally) for use in the Pathfinder game.  Light on art but packed full of useful random tables to quickly generate, or just inspire ideas, for animated skulls in your campaign.

It is a very modular work with random tables to provide how an animated skull was created, how it is encounter, appearance, abilities and more.  Several basic “skull types” are provided to be used and modified but the other tables and one completely generated (and statted out) skull is provided as an example.  All very useful and filled with solid inspirations for a GM.

Disclosure: As a featured reviewer for RPGNow/DriveThroughRPG, I received my copy of this product for free from the publisher for the purpose of this review.

PinkCat: Running in the Shade “No Sex Please, its BTL” (A different sort of SR campaign report)

14 May, 2015

New Magic Item – Isabel’s Sword of Freedom

13 May, 2015

Strike for freedom!Voddick walked to the left and Gollaon to the right of the young woman with the silver sword.  The two friends were alert for danger as the young woman touched the shackled of the slaves with her sword tip and the bindings fell away.  In a matter of minutes, the compound full of people, once enchained, was freed.

“The slavers will be back with reinforcements any moment now,” said Voddick, gripping his crossbow tightly.

“Fear not,” said the woman, “these people have their freedom back and they will fight and die before they surrender it again!”  She raised her sword and the former slaves raised tools and chains to use as weapons.

“Leading an ill-armed force of rabble into battle, my favorite,” said Gollaon with a grin.  “Come on Voddick.  Immortality in a song awaits us.”

“As long as we live to hear it,” grumbled Voddick.

Isabel’s Sword of Freedom

Rokugan SRIU Episode 2 “Cherry blossoms fall . . .” (L5R Campaign Report)

6 May, 2015

The basic structure of the campaign here Rokugan SRIU and the previous game (and the other three characters) described here: Episode 1 “. . . and a monkey.”

Two new characters joined the unit:

Doji Otaro, a doji courtier and inheriting son . . . who lacks compassion.  (Doji Courtier 2,  Played by M.)

Otaku Asilah, outspoken Otaku battlemaiden . . . who just knows a gaijin invasion is going to happen any day now.  (Utaku battlemaiden 1, Played by C2, his first time playing L5R.)

The new team members are introduced and then Doji Akira takes them all out for fine dining and a play (kabuki as the Crab usually do not like noh) as a team building / get to know you exercise.  It is somewhat successful. Cherry BlossomsIt is spring in Otosan Utchi, capital of the Empire of Rokugan, and in only a few days, the great Hanami, the cherry blossom-festival, begins.  Originally the Hanami was used to divine that year’s harvest as well as announce the rice-planting season through reading the blossom and afterwards offering were made with sake. Emperor Hantai Saga (Hantai VI) adopted this practice, holding flower-viewing parties with sake and feasts underneath the blossoming boughs of sakura trees in the Imperial Court.  Poems would be written praising the delicate flowers, which were seen as a metaphor for life itself, luminous and beautiful yet fleeting and ephemeral.

The custom was originally limited to the elite of the Imperial Court, but soon spread to samurai society.  Under the sakura trees, people had lunch and drank sake in cheerful feasts. The teasing proverb ‘dumplings rather than flowers’ (“hana yori dango”) hints at the real priorities for most cherry blossom viewers, meaning that the viewer are more interested in the good food and free flowing drinks accompanying a hanami party than actually observing the flowers themselves. Therefore it is unfortunate that the cherry trees show no signs of blooming, there are neither buds nor blossoms.  As the main grove of such trees are planted beside the Imperial roads, it indirectly falls into Magistrate Doji Akira’s portfolio and he has been contacted by the city-gardener, Kakita Yuzuki, to try and determine what is wrong.  She meet with the team and says that the trees are healthy – so there is no natural cause for the missing signs of blooming.  A group of three heimin sent to use powerful fertilizers to try and shock one of the trees into blooming vanished.  His assistant sent to check on them vanished as well. Tuesday Magic Item – Moonmist Coronet

5 May, 2015

Walk under the Moonlight“Where did she go?” asked Voddick, looking around in confusion.  The were standing at the edge of the river, a low mist had rolled in.  The two story buildings on either side looked difficult to climb.  “She was only out of sight for a moment.”

“There!” pointed Gollaon.  “In the mist!”

“Is she walking on water?”

“No, too high.  She is climbing the mist itself.”

“Nice trick,” said Voddick.  “There is no way we can chase her is there.”

“Not tonight.  But well played on her part.” Gollaon continued peering into the mist.

“I do not like it when we have to chase people as clever as us.”

Moonmist Coronet

These simple silver headbands are decorated with the phases of the moon, the full moon placed in the center.  Their silver never permanently tarnishes, though contact with cold iron will cause it to temporarily do so, and in direct moonlight it glows with a soft radiance.
