Lash of the Overseer (A to Z Challenge, L)

14 April, 2015

Harsh discipline“I don’t like the look of that red-skinned fellow or his whip,” said Voddick in a low voice.

“No one likes a slaver,” replied Gollaon, equally quietly.

“We had best return to rescue the slaves after he leaves.”

“But will he?  He seems to enjoy his work too much,” said Gollaon with another glance.  “Let us find a wine house and refine our plans, keeping him in mind.”

“Always new problems,” muttered Voddick following his friend.

“At least we are rarely bored,” retorted Gollaon cheerfully.

Lash of the Overseer

These cruel items were originally made for priests of the god of slavers but their use and construction has outlived the death of that power.  Made of woven leather made from demons, humans and beasts of burden and tipped with infernal iron, the handle is made of rune-carved bone wrapped in leather and gold wire.

It is a +2 whip that can damage any creature regardless or armor or natural armor.  But its major power is a marking strike can be used three times a day, it is triggered as a free action on a successful attack and has the following effects:

  • Excruciating Pain, this burning and consuming pain imposes a -4 penalty on attack rolls, skill checks, and ability checks for 1d6+1 rounds, a Will save (DC 18) reduces this to one round.
  • Permanent Mark, the lash wound seals into a permanent scar that is unique but similar and recognizable as being made by a particular whip.  The bearer of the mark suffers a -4 penalty to resist intimidation or fear effects created by the bearer of the whip.  The mark can only be removed by a remove curse or similar magic.

Lastly, once a day, the bearer of the whip can animate the bodies of those marked by it, within 60′, as skeletons or zombies (bearer’s choice) for 1d4 hours, under the control of the whip’s bearer.

Aura moderate necrourgy; CL 9th
Slot none; Price 17,301; Weight 2 lbs
Construction Requirements
Craft Magic Arms and Armor, animate dead, bestow curse, fear, symbol of fear; Cost 8,500 + 301 for the whip

Notes: This is also doubling as my Tuesday magic item for the week.  A pricy item but probably a worthwhile investment for a major slaver.
