Tuesday Magic Item – Helmsplitter Halberd (for Pathfinder and D&D5)

3 March, 2015

Hard hitting halberdThe young men marched grimly by, pikes or halberds on their shoulders.  Their colorful clothing at odds to their practical breastplates and grim expressions.

“They do not seem happy,” observed Golloan.

“Would you be, marching to war?” replied Voddick.

“Not usually.  They do seem quite well equipped for it.”

“Professional mercenaries, they will be happier fighting  . . . or looting.”

“True, looting usually raises my spirits.”

Helmsplitter Halberd

These polearms are heavy and ruggedly made and any decoration will be on the metal head.  No matter how decorated, the basic nature of this weapon as a brutal tool of war cannot be disguised.  They are manufactured for groups and states that value military efficiency over appearances.

It is a +1 halberd that with a mighty swing, can crack even the heaviest armor.  By taking a mighty swing, penalizing the wielder’s armor class by one, the wielder gains a +3 equipment bonus to attack against anyone wearing heavy armor (though it is not as effective against natural armor, only providing a +2 against a  natural armor bonus of +6 or higher) and a +1 bonus to damage if a critical threat is rolled (not multiplied on a critical threat).

Aura faint transmutation; CL 5th
Slot none; Price 3,310; Weight 12 lbs
Construction Requirements
Craft Wondrous Item, bull’s strength, shatter; Cost 1,500 + 310 for the halberd

For D&D5:

It is a +1 halberd and when the wielder takes a mighty swing, penalizing the wielder’s armor class by one, the wielder gains advantage on their attack roll against anyone wearing heavy armor (or with a  natural armor bonus of +6 or higher).

Notes: As requested, one magical polearm, inspired by the military prowess of the Swiss mercenaries.

  1. Very useful for a landsknecht.

  2. Nice. There’s definitely at least one of these somewhere in our HOTDQ game now…
