Tuesday Magic Item – Amber Ant Amulet

24 February, 2015

Together foreverVoddick gasped for breath, lying on his back on the roof.

“I though we would never loose them,” muttered Golloan, peeking over the edge into the alley several stories below.

“It was like they knew where their friend were, even though they hardly said a word,” said Voddick quietly.

“And they looked a bit alike too, did you notice?”

“A family then?  What did we do to offend them?  We have only been in town one night.”

Amber Ant Amulet

These amulets, as one can guess from the name, consist of pieces of amber with ants trapped inside them.  The finishing is minimal and they are most often worn on chains.

The wearer of an Amber Ant gains a +1 morale bonus to saves against fear and is treated as if they had the Endurance feat (if they already have that feat, the gain a +1 morale bonus on Fortitude saves).

But the true power of the Amber Ant is shown when multiple wearers act in concert, a wearer gains an intuitive sense of the others wearers around them.   This give the following abilities when working with another Amber Ant wearer:

  • The bonus they give from the Aid Another action is increased to +3.
  • Once per combat, they can use Aid Another as a swift action.
  • Once a day, a group of wearers within sight of each other may set their initiative to the highest initiative among them (all must agree to this).
  • The bonus to saves against fear is increased to +2 as long as there is another wearer in sight.

A wearer also gains a +2 circumstance bonus to Sense Motive checks made against another wearer.

However, any group that wears them will gradually find their thoughts and opinions aligning and harmonizing.  Long time wearers of the amulets will start to dress and talk alike.

  1. Cool! Ever since reading an Arak story with a amber monster in it, I’ve always felt amber was underused in rpgs.

    • Agreed and it has some much potential for use. I may try and play around with some other amber ideas in the near future.

  2. I like it. Especially the continued picaresque and hapless adventures of Voddick and Golloan. Not really an item for PCs though due to the personality change — but a nifty NPC item.

    • Well, it is more of a roleplaying thing for PCs. But it would also be a good way to represent coordinating between a PC and their hirelings.
