Tuesday Magic Item – Snowflake Ring

9 December, 2014

Snowflake“But without snow, how will Father Frost be able to get to us?” asked the smallest of the children.

“His sled will get stuck,” worried the middle one.

“Do not worry, my dears,” said I, playing with the ring on my right hand.  “Indeed, I think if you look outside, you will see that the snow has already begun to fall.”

They rushed to the windows and squealed with delight as the first flakes of snow began coating the garden.

Snowflake Ring

These magical rings are a plain silver band set with a piece of cut crystal that resembles a snowflake.  The sharp-eyed may notice that the crystal is never the same snowflake twice, changing subtly between viewing.

The basic power of this ring is to shield its wearer from cold, they gain the benefit of an endure elements spell (to cold only) and resistance to cold equal to five plus the wearer’s Charisma modifier (minimum 0), they also gain a +2 luck bonus to saves to avoid slipping or falling due to ice or snow.

Once a day, the wearer may cause it to snow in a mile/one and a half kilometer wide radius centered on the wearer, it snows for 2d6 times ten minutes, with one inch/two and a half centimeters of snow falling each ten minutes.  The snow will usually bring a slight drop of temperature with it but it will snow even if it is warm enough for it to instantly melt on contact with the ground.  The wearer can take one point of Constitution damage when they activate the snowfall ability to extend the duration by an additional 2d6 ten minute blocks and they can expend any number of Constitution points (up to their current score) to increase the duration.

For D&D 5:

Snowflake Ring

Your are not bothered by natural cold, you also gain resistance to cold and advantage on saves to avoid slipping on ice or snow.

Once a day, the wearer may cause it to snow in a mile/one and a half kilometer wide radius centered on the wearer, it snows for 2d6 times ten minutes, with one inch/two and a half centimeters of snow falling each ten minutes.

Notes: An actual winter themed item!  Useful for more than just making children happy, though that is an entirely excellent use of this item.

The version for the new D&D is not quite as nuanced as the Pathfinder one as I am still learning the ins and outs of the new D&D, not sure how to represent spending life force in it yet.
