Tuesday Magic Item – Fox Cape

24 June, 2014

Cape Fox“How do they know our every move?” cursed Sir Morase.  “They are simple people, they did not even used iron weapons before we traded with them.”

“They are skilled warriors and brave, my lord,” said his sworn sword.  “Do not mistake the lack of metal working skills for lack of intelligence.”

“Enough!  They are barbarians and we will defeat them.”

“Yes, my lord,” replied the sworn sword, tossing a stick at the fox rooting around in the camp’s midden.

Fox Cape

These cloaks are made of a mix of heavy cloth, leather and fox fur, the colors are all neutral and blend in easily with most terrain.  The fittings are carved bone taken from animals killed by foxes.  The fur must be given freely by the fox and blessed in a ceremony.

The Fox Cape is good at allowing its wearer to blend in, providing a +3 enhancement bonus to Stealth checks raised to +5 in grasslands and deserts.  Once per day, the wearer may transform into a fox (as though using beast shape II) for an hour plus five minutes for each point of Charisma bonus the wearer has.

A rarer variant is the Mated Fox Cape, which are only made from the fur of mated foxes and again, must be freely given.  The wearers must also be lovers, sworn to one another.  When fighting alongside one or acting to help the other, they increase the bonus given by the aid another action by one.  When in fox form, they may gain the benefit of a magic fang effect when fighting side by side.  But should the owner ever betray their lover, they will sicken and die (losing one point of Constitution per day).

  1. Interesting. Especially the Mated Fox Cape. So much story there. Also, I would like to read more of the the story of the arrogant Sir Morase and his war against the “barbarians”…

Question: what motivates a fox to give away its fur?

    • Good question. In exchange for protecting its family perhaps?

  2. Do the pelts of different fox species have the same abilities?

    • You could customize the Stealth bonus by the region the fox was from, these are optimized for the native lands of the Cape Fox.
