Tuesday Magic Item – The Devil’s Golden Fiddle

5 November, 2013

Play boy play! The devil went down to Georgia, he was looking for a soul to steal.
He was in a bind ‘cos he was way behind and he was willin’ to make a deal.
When he came across this young man sawin’ on a fiddle and playin’ it hot.
And the devil jumped upon a hickory stump and said: “Boy let me tell you what:
“I guess you didn’t know it, but I’m a fiddle player too.
“And if you’d care to take a dare, I’ll make a bet with you.
“Now you play a pretty good fiddle, boy, but give the devil his due:
“I bet a fiddle of gold against your soul, ‘cos I think I’m better than you.”
The boy said: “My name’s Johnny and it might be a sin,
“But I’ll take your bet, your gonna regret, ‘cos I’m the best that’s ever been.”

The Devil’s Golden Fiddle

How many of these unusual musical instruments exist is unknown, they are -as the name suggests- fiddles made of gold, but the gold is rigid not malleable as one would expect and is nearly impervious to harm.  The strings have to be changed but the body of the fiddle does not show wear nor can it be dented without excessive force and even that tends to repair itself when no one is looking.  All indications are these instruments are indeed made in hell or a similar place.

Until it is claimed, it is simply an unusual masterwork fiddle, but once someone claims it (as simple as saying, “that fiddle is mine”) it becomes their providing the owner with a +10 enhancement bonus to Perform (string) and the fiddler gains a +4 profane bonus to Charisma while playing the fiddle (this does not provide additional spells to Charisma-based casters, but it does boost the DC of spells they cast while playing).

However, the fiddle plays (or preys) upon the owner’s vanity, making them want to show off their skill with the fiddle at every opportunity.  The owner must make a Will save (DC 10) to resist playing it when it is even passingly suggested.  When playing for anyone of consequence, or another musician, the owner must make a Will save (DC 30) or add unneeded complex flourishes to their performance that penalize their Perform roll by -5 (though may be appreciated by the musically astute).  Lastly, if the fiddle player is ever performing in a life or death contest, the fiddle’s string will break at the worst possible moment, causing the Perform check to be treated as if a natural one was rolled.

The fiddle is almost impossible to damage (hardness 15, 30 hit points) and nearly immune to energy damage (Resistance 50 to all energy types), and if left unobserved it repairs itself at the rate of one hit point an hour.
