New Oracle Mystery – Angel of War

4 June, 2012

Like the fallen angels they style themselves after, the followers of the Angel of War find and guide warriors, hopefully into heroes, by choosing a single person (their ‘chosen bond’) to serve and direct.

Angel of War

The Angel of War marks her own

Mark of the Angel

Deities: As appropriate to the setting.

Class Skills: An oracle with the Angel of War mystery adds Perception, Ride, Stealth and Survival to her list of class skills.

Bonus Spells: shield of faith (2nd), shield other (4th), magic vestment (6th), air walk (8th), break enchantment (10th), heroes’ feast (12th), greater restoration (14th), divine vessel (16th), summon monster IX (18th).

Special: The Angel of War seeks one person to serve, guide and protect, once they have chosen that person there are bound to them until one or the other of them dies.  Following the death of their chosen bound, the oracle is shaken for 1 day per level of their chosen bond.

While unbound, the oracle with the Angel of War mystery treats their Charisma as 2 points lower for the purpose of spellcasting.  When bound, they cast spell targeting their chosen bond at +1 caster level.

An oracle with the Angel of War mystery can choose from any of the following revelations, though At the Chosen’s Side is almost always the first revelation learned.

At the Chosen’s Side (Ex): You gain proficiency in all martial weapons and when you take the aid another action in combat to assist your chosen bond, the bonus is increased to +3.  At 7th level you guard the Bodyguard feat for free even if you do not have the appropriate prerequisites.

Battlefield Clarity (Ex): Once per day, as an immediate action, whenever you fail a saving throw that causes you to become blinded, deafened, frightened, panicked, paralyzed, shaken, or stunned, you may attempt that saving throw again, with a +4 insight bonus on the roll. You must take the second result, even if it is worse. At 7th and 15th level, you can use this ability one additional time per day.*

Combat Healer (Su): Whenever you cast a cure spell (a spell with “cure” in its name), you can cast it as a swift action, as if using the Quicken Spell feat, by expending two spell slots. This does not increase the level of the spell. You can use this ability once per day at 7th level and one additional time per day for every four levels beyond 7th. You must be at least 7th level to select this revelation.*

Endure any Hardship (Ex): You gain Great Fortitude as a bonus feat.  At 7th level, you gain Endurance as a bonus feat.  At 13th level you gain Diehard as a bonus feat. And, lastly, at 19th level, you gain Improved Great Fortitude feat as a bonus feat.

Guard the Chosen (Ex): You gain the Saving Shield feat as a bonus feat.  At 7th level reduce the armor check penalties from using a shield by 1.  At 9h level you gain a +1 bonus to reflex saves when using a shield and grant the same to anyone protected by the Saving Shield feat.  At 13th level, the bonuses from saving shield are increased by 1.  At 17th level you gain a +1 dodge bonus to armor class and increase the reflex save bonus you gain to +2 when using a shield.

Healing Hands (Ex): You gain a +4 bonus on Heal checks. You may provide first aid to two people or treat two people for poison as a standard action (make a separate Heal check for each creature). When using the Heal skill to treat wounds from caltrops (and so on), treat deadly wounds, treat poison, treat disease, or treat long-term care, you may treat double the normal number of people you may treat at the same time. You may provide long term care for yourself.**

Heal Others, Heal Oneself (Su): Whenever you cast a cure spell, you heal an amount of damage equal to the level of the cure spell, excess points become temporary hit points that stack with themselves to a maximum of the oracle’s level and last for one minute.  Additionally, if the cure spell cast would cure points beyond needed to restore the target to full hit points, the oracle receives half (rounded up) of that amount in healing, these do not become temporary hit points however.

Preternatural Coordination (Ex): The oracle receives a teamwork feat as a bonus feat. She must meet the prerequisites for this feat. As long as her chosen bond is within 30′, she may use the teamwork feat if she meets the prerequisites.  If the oracle has additional teamwork feats, they also can be used by her chosen bond under the same conditions.  At 11th level, the oracle and her chosen bond gain a +1 bonus to reflex saves as long as they are both within 30′ of one another.

Weapon Mastery (Ex): Select one weapon with which you are proficient. You gain Weapon Focus with that weapon. At 8th level, you gain Improved Critical with that weapon. At 12th level, you gain Greater Weapon Focus with that weapon. You do not need to meet the prerequisites to receive these feats.*

Wings of the Guardian (Su): You can move quickly, skimming across the ground to come to the aid of your allies.  At 1st level, you no longer leave tracks. At 5th level, you can hover up to 6 inches above the ground or even above liquid surfaces, as if levitating. At 10th level, you gain the ability to fly, as per the spell, for a number of minutes per day equal to your oracle level. This duration does not need to be consecutive, but it must be spent in 1-minute increments.

Final Revelation

Upon reaching 20th level, you become an avatar of the Angel of War. You and your chosen bond draw upon a single pool of hit points which are restored through Fast Healing equal to your Charisma modifier (minimum 1) and when either of the two must make a save, both characters may roll and use the highest total save.  As long as you are adjacent to your chosen bond, neither character may be flanked.

Notes: Modeled on the Fallen Angel Order of my wife’s campaign for her character Aisha.   But I am always happy to customize a class or race to make a player happy.
