Tuesday Magic Item – Coward’s Friend

13 March, 2012

While no one would trust Valmenes the Crossbowman, or the Coward as he is more widely known, to stand up to a cavalry charge -or even a mean barmaid- but his skill with his weapon and his knack for getting out of danger still make him a useful friend to have.  Just do not count on him sticking around after he takes his shot.

Coward’s Friend

These worn silver talismans have a wing design on one side and what once was a motto on the back.  When worn, they are almost impossible to lose or to have stolen, for reasons unknown.

Not one of these

Talismans

The person wearing Coward’s Friend gains a +3 competence bonus to Perception checks to notice ambushes, traps and other such dangers.  They also gain a +1 dodge bonus to armor class when using the Total Defense or Withdraw actions.

However, the wearer suffers a -3 penalty to resist fear-based effects -and can never be made immune to fear- but while suffering from fear they gain the following bonuses when retreating (or fleeing) from the source of fear:*

  • Shaken, +1 dodge bonus to armor class and +5′ of movement.
  • Scared, +2 dodge bonus to armor class, +1 to reflex saves and +10′ of movement.
  • Panicked, +3 dodge bonus to armor class, +1 to reflex saves and +15′ of movement.

Notes: Just thinking more about fear in games after yesterday’s article so thought that I should make an item tied directly into using fear for something useful.

  1. Interesting. I missed yesterdays article, so headed over there now…

  2. Yet another item that I want for Bradley

  3. I’m going through Carrion Crown right now, and I must admit that this item actually looks a bit tempting. When the haunts come for me, I’ll be long gone!
