Newish Monster – Osquip (Stellar)

18 December, 2011

The Rat Lord, god of vermin, mice and rats, fled through his home maze.  Behind him he could hear the dragons tearing through his traps and defenses as though they were toys.  His lair was mean to challenge and confound mortals, it could not stop or withstand the fury of the dragons.  He knew he was one of the last of the gods left, the combative beast lords had fallen in the first of the draconic assaults, but not him, he has struck from the shadows, killing wounded dragons and avoiding being seen until a few moments ago.  Now they had his scent and he was running out of places to hide.

He drew fourth the Rat Tooth Blade and slashed his palm, feeding his blood to his loyal servants waiting for him.  He watched them start to change and grow larger and more powerful.  “Take my power, my children.  Avenge me against the dragons.  I gift you with speed and strength and . . .” his last word were lost, as the Rat Lord’s head was savagely wrenched from his body by the mighty ebony dragon known as the Brute.

The rats who had fed on the Rat Lord’s blood fled to the world, mutating and growing becoming the plague on the dragons known as Osquips.

OSQUIP (Stellar)

It is too big to be a rat but it must be related to them, with massive incisors and corded jaw muscles.  Its pink-grey skin is covered with stone dust and it glares at you with black eyes.  Its six legs scrabble at the stone before launching into a vicious attack.

Bleeding Threat (Ex): When an osquip scores a critical threat that is a successful hit, it causes one point of bleed damage, this is doubled on a successful critical.

Rage against Dragons (Ex): Once an osquip has tasted dragon blood, it flies into a killing frenzy against that dragon for a number of rounds per day equal to 4 + its Constitution modifier.  While in rage, a osquip gains a +4 morale bonus to her Strength and Constitution, as well as a +2 morale bonus on Will saves. In addition, it takes a –2 penalty to Armor Class. The increase to Constitution grants the osquip 2 hit points per Hit Dice, but these disappear when the rage ends and are not lost first like temporary hit points.  An osquip is fatigued after rage for a number of rounds equal to 2 times the number of rounds spent in the rage.

These creatures burrow through just about anything in search of food.  They have an instinctive desire to eat dragon eggs and flesh which overrides even their desire for survival.  Osquips are viciously territorial and possess a low cunning when defending their lairs.

They are rat-like creatures the size of small dogs with pink to gray leathery skin, short tails and three to five pairs of legs (which is usually consistent within a nest of osquips).

What you may know about an Osquip:

Knowledge (Dungeoneering or Nature) DC 18. The osquip is a dangerous pest and low level predator and often attacks in packs.

Knowledge (Dungeoneering or Nature) DC 25.  The teeth of the osquip are very sharp and can cause deep and bleeding wounds.

Knowledge (Dungeoneering or Nature) DC 30.  Osquip love nothing more than to eat dragon eggs and are driven into a frenzy by the taste of dragon’s blood.

Clerics with the Dragon domain and Dragon Bloodline Sorcerers receive a +2 bonus on this knowledge check.

Before Combat: Osquips will try to mass so that they outnumber their foes and then rush into close combat all at once.

During Combat: Osquips will try to take down wounded foes first and then move on to the next most vulnerable foe, unless they taste dragon blood then they will all attack the dragon.

Morale: Osquips will fight to the death in defense of their nests but will withdraw from other combats once both wounded and outnumbered.

Notes: When I decided to use osquips in my most recent adventure I did not know how they fit into the Sea of Stars, but then inspiration struck and they are now the Rat Lord’s revenge on the dragons.

  1. I like this rethink of the osquip. The tie-in to dragons is a great angle.

    • Thank you, I was very pleased with how it all fit together.
