Pattern Seekers – Episode 2: Temple of the Sun above the Water

Having completed their first task and returned with the dagger of carved stone, our heroes have two days to rest and learn a bit more about their new ‘home’ such as it is totally enclosed except for the gates out and is constantly being expanded by legions of insects.  They are then summoned by the Shaper and given a new object to acquire, a staff of crystallized flames (and some potions to help with the task).

The portal lets our heroes out in a lovely forest, nearby a road cuts through it.  Once on the road they hear the clop of hooves and the rattle of wheel as the Peddler Lymm and his cart of wonder appears.  They travel with him down the road and soon through fields to the walled town of Othan above which rises a caldera upon which the Temple of the Sun (above the water) is perched.  Except for Defender (who does not sleep) and Thea (who wants to sleep outside) they get rooms at the Inn of the Midnight Sun and Lymm gets a finder’s fee for bringing in custom.  The character split up to scout around and gain information:

  • DeLorian and Defender explore the town and its fine copper goods and find a pie shop to eat at.
  • Morgrymson and Bradley approach Sir Morningstar’s Keep, at the center of town and speak to his castellan and gaining an invitation to dinner with the knight.
  • Theo and Pho find a place to sleep outside the city in a nice tree.  Thea also notices that she, well more accurately Pho, is being shadowed by one of the men-at-arms while they are in town.

That evening, Bradley and Morgrymson return to the keep for dinner, exchanging news and sounding out each other.  Morgrymson attempts to broker a trade agreement despite not having any real examples of his Clan’s work.  Bradley marks them as potential allies in his quest for his stolen crown.

The next morning they climbed the stairs to the Temple, took the tour, learned that the staff was in the possession of the high priest (who was expected back shortly).  Then to the inner part of the caldera where they visited the outer works of the mine inside the caldera where the copper is dug up from and the lake, which stores sunlight and glows well into the night and is also said to have healing properties.  While our heroes gathering water from the lake, the high priest returned, flying in on a chariot pulled by two goats.   They trek back up to the temple and speak to the high priest, who stops them before they can go very far, having them meet with him in a few minute in a secure room with two burly guards.

After confirming that the heroes are not agents of the Draconic Imperium, the High Priest Valshan Sunson listens to their pitch but, while sympathetic to their cuase, he will not give up the staff.  At least not without a replacement.  He agrees to give them a list of missing artifacts of the Sun God that he could afford to exchange for the staff.

The next morning, scrolls describing the missing artifacts are delivered and our heroes make their way back into the nest and meet with the Shaper who listens to their words and agrees that not offending the Sun Cult is a wise policy and they they will seek the location of an artifact to exchange.

Thus ended the episode.

Notes: An interesting game as it involved very little dice rolling and no combat at all, to the apparent disappointment of some of the players.
