Tuesday Magic Item – Spear of the Summer Solstice

21 June, 2011

Kierian of the Broad Hand, war leader of the Caltan Clan, claimed the spear from the top of the mount.  “Today we go to war!” he shouted, the sunlight seeming to turn the spear to flame in his hands.

Spear of the Summer Solstice

These spears are ornate, usually made of tempered bronze inlaid with gold on an oak shaft polished to a honey sheen.  When it catches the sunlight, it glows in sympathetic light.

The Spear of the Summer Solstice is a +1 keen spear that provides a +4 competence bonus to Diplomacy checks.  If left in the sunlight for the entirety of the summer solstice, it radiates a continuous Bless aura until the Winter Solstice and once during that time, as a free action, the power of the sun may be channeled through the spear making it a +2 keen flaming burst spear for one hour.

Aura moderate transmutation [light]; CL 10th
Slot none; Price 12,805; Weight by spear
Requirements Craft Magic Arms and Armor, bless, daylight, eagle’s splendor; Cost 6,250 + 305 for the spear (+500 xp for D&D)

Notes: Happy Solstice all!

  1. Another very flavorful item. Because the spear is already a powerful item (10th level), what do you think about adding the option of either using “+2 keen flaming burst spear” or daylight spell? I just thought that it would be cool if the spear could literally summon “the light of the summer solstice”

    • Sure. Though why not let it do both? Daylight is a nice but not overpowered effect.

  2. Yes, both! That was what I meant… 🙂
