New Monster – Ruby Hawk

22 October, 2010

There is a flash of fire and the rabbit lay on its side, burned and dead.  Swooping down to snatch the charred corpse was a hawk of flashing red.  In a flash it has seized its prey and taken wing.

Blazing Gaze(Su): With a glance, the ruby hawk may cause a burst of fire to envelope a single target up to 180′ away for 4d6 damage.

Dancing Flames (Ex): The heat haze shimmering around a ruby hawk masks it outline and movement, providing concealment (20% miss chance) against all attacks.

Diving Attack (Ex): a ruby hawk may plunge down upon its prey from a great height, if it flies down more than 50′ it may make a charge attack with its talons only at +4 attack (including the charge bonus) and causing 3d4+3/19-20 + 1d6 fire with each talon.

See through Smoke and Ashes (Su): Smoke and ashes does not block the vision of a ruby hawk in any way.

Ruby Plumage (Ex): The feathers of a ruby hawk are valuable in their own right, worth 2d4x75 gold, degraded by the damage inflicted upon the noble creature.  These feathers may be substituted for rubies as material components.

What you may know about the Ruby hawk:
Knowledge (Arcane or Nature) DC 20. These attractive creatures are linked to the elemental plane of fire in some mysterious way.  The heat they generate can make it hard to target them effectively.

Knowledge (Arcane or Nature) 27.  These fiery birds are tied to the elemental of fire which has very little effect upon them and which they can cast at others with but a gaze.

Druids receive a +2 bonus on this knowledge check.

Before Combat: Ruby hawks are mostly unconcerned with intruders unless they cause some sort of trouble.  Though they will keep an eye on those who seem unconcerned with fire or heat, that they recognize as a potential threat.

During Combat: The ruby hawk will use its blazing gaze against foes with missile or magic, diving in to wound them if needed.  It will usually save the wall of fire to pin multiple foes or to cover its escape.  Ruby hawks rarely stay in melee combat unless it is to defend their mate or nest.

Morale: Any serious damage will cause them to break off combat.  The only time they will fight to the death is in defense of their nest or mate.

Notes: At that wraps up the four jeweled birds, will try to have some adventure seeds up for them soon.
