New Monster – Sapphire Falcon

11 October, 2010

Flying at the height of the waves is a bird a blue so pure it is almost painful to look at.  It turns lazily, cutting through a wave as if it was not there, not slowing at all.

Diving Attack (Ex): a sapphire falcon may plunge down upon its prey from a great height, if it flies down more than 50′ it may make a charge attack with its talons only at +4 attack (including the charge bonus) and causing 3d6+6/19-20 x3 with each talon.
Gaze of Watery Binding (Su): With a glance, the sapphire falcon may cause water to swirl around and entangle a target up to 180′ with no range penalties.  The watery binding does 2d6 crushing damage and is entangled (DC 17, 8 hp) for 1d4+1 rounds or until they escape or break free as comes first.
Fly through the Water (Su): For sapphire falcons, air and water are one and they can fly through both with equal ease.
See through Water (Su): Water, even in the form of fog or rain, does not block the vision of a sapphire falcon in any way.
Slick (Ex): Catch or even holding a sapphire falcon when they do not wish to be held is almost impossible.  They gain a +8 to their CMD to avoid being grappled, to escape grapples and to Escape Artist checks to work their way free of bindings or ropes.

What you may know about the Sapphire Falcon:
Knowledge (Arcane or Nature) DC 20. These beautiful creatures are linked to the elemental plane of water in some mysterious way.  They can be very territorial and sometime attack those who hunt or fish in their territory.

Knowledge (Arcane or Nature) 27.  These brilliant blue birds are tied to the water which they can control and fly through as if it was air.

Druids receive a +2 bonus on this knowledge check.

Before Combat: Sapphire falcons are oddly territorial and will often watch over anyone crossing into their territory.  They keep a sharp eye out for hunters with missile weapons or magic as either can be dangerous to them.

During Combat: The sapphire falcon will use it gaze of watery binding to disable foes with missile or magic before diving in to wound them and, hopefully, drive them off.  Sapphire falcon will rarely maintain melee combat unless it is to defend their mate or nest.

Morale: Any serious damage will cause them to break off combat.  The only time they will fight to the death is in defense of their nest or mate.

Notes:  The second of the jeweled elemental birds (after the diamond eagle).

These are easier to work into an adventure because of their territoriality.  Adventurers could be recruited to find out what is attacking a village’s fishermen or why hunters venturing to the upper cataract are not returning.
