Tuesday Magic Item – Guardian’s Halberd

28 September, 2010

The Azure Guards held off the usurper’s men for as long as they could but their magic halberd and their loyalty was no match for the numbers of mercenaries in his employ.  But each second they fought gave the young countess more time to escape.  A thrown dagger would have ended her life, had not a halberd deflected it at the last moment and then she was free across the bridge as the last of the Azure Guardsmen fell into a line to slow the pursuit.

Guardian’s Halberd

These weapons are symbols of service usually only given to the elite guards of various types.  These halberds are made of the finest wood and metal, the design of the blade often evocative of whom the weapon serves and there are always ornately decorated.

Halberd, Do, with fleur-de-lis (Henry VII)

Halberd (Henry VII)

The Guardian’s Halberd is a +2 keen halberd that provides its wielder with a +1 shield bonus when held.  Once a day, as a free action the wielder can activate an aid effect (10th level of effect) on himself.

Each Guardian’s Halberd is keyed to a particular bloodline or office, when it is within 50′ of a person that it is keyed to it generate a continuous shield other effect on the person of that bloodline or office.  The effect is constant but each instance of damage transfer can be resisted with a Will save (DC 20).

Aura strong abjuration; CL 10th
Slot none; Price 40,000; Weight 12 lbs
Construction
Requirements Craft Magic Arms and Armor, aid, keen edge, shield of faith, shield other; Cost 20,000 (+800 xp for D&D)

Notes: Inspired by the Swiss Guards and, especially, by the Stand of the Swiss Guard.

Though I also though it might be fun to have a PC realize that his prized weapon was protecting their archenemy in combat.

  1. This is the kind of thing court magists would make for their patron’s guardians. Like it a lot.

  2. The shield other is a little confusing.

The office holder receives shield other and damage taken by the office holder is transferred to the halbard holder? or Halbard?

What happens if there are more than one of the guards or officers?

The spell normally fails if shielded and damage taker are separated by too much space. How does this work?

    I like the item though.

    • Damage is transferred to the wielder of the guardian’s halberd.

If there is more than one valid guardian, I would say whichever chooses to take the damage or decide randomly.

As long as you are within 50′ of an appropriate person, the shield other effect is active, if you move away it drops until you return to within 50′.

      Hope that clarifies matters.
