Through the Lens of History: Using History for Better Gaming
Vision 11: With Scimitar, Veil and Book
Muslim Women Warriors

Before beginning this month’s article the Lens wishes to shed some light on Islamic practices that are often imperfectly understood.

The term jihad is usually used in an overly simplified way.  Muhammad taught that there are two jihads: a greater and a lesser.  The greater jihad is each Muslim’s personal struggle to be true and faithful to God.  The Prophet defined the greater jihad as the fight against the souls inclination to do evil.

Badgerkin (“Brave Folk”)

In the Crimson-Lined Valley, the Clans are guarded by the warriors of Drake’s Hold, the bravest of them are from the Badgerkin line.  The origins of the Brave Folk are traced back to the Sundering when the Baron of Jackery drew upon all of their resources to defender the Crimson-Lined Valley from invasion.  Among the defenders were the trained badgers of the young Baron.  What happened has never made clear, but the Brave Folk returned from the battle having driven off the invaders, their leader was the young Baron henceforth known as Rolland the Brave.

Review – How to train your Dragon

9 May, 2010

So, my wife and I say this as part of her Mother’s Day.  How to train your Dragon is a fun little movie, entirely predictable and most of the dragons are pretty goofy looking but it is a traditional story very well told.  It is aimed at kids so do not expect deep drama or high violence.  The animation is well done and the 3D effects do not distract.  There are some fun bits in the movies even if there are no surprises.

Some more thoughts on the movie, which will inevitable include some spoilers.

Sting Squirrel
Oh, its just a squirrel.  Maybe a bit large for a squirrel.  Wait?  Does it?  It does!  It has two pairs of fore limbs!  Are those mandibles?  And a sting in the tail!  Run!  Run!!  Ru . . .

Tuesday Magic Item – Communicative Mirror

4 May, 2010

What news? The Orrdash Horde moved quickly, but not as quickly as the Tyralic Order of Wizards.  The wizards communicated the direction of the horde’s advance and coordinate the response of the Vendian Baronies so that they were not overrun piecemeal.  When asked how they knew what the horde was doing, the wizards replied, “We see father than mortals.”

Communicative Mirror

These devices are constructed to facilitate rapid communication among magical orders.  They usually take the form of a wall mirror though hand mirrors are popular among adventuring wizards marked with a runic mark at the very least and many are ornately decorated.  Each of these items is keyed to either an owner or a location (such as the Guildhouse of the Order of Night in Viant) by use of the arcane mark spell.
