New Spell – The Wrathful Glare of the Sun

16 April, 2010

The priestess stood atop the highest tower barely visible in the lightening sky, chanting prayers to the Lady Sun.  As the first rays of the dawn’s light touched her outstretched hand they turned into a blazing spear of white hot light that burned through the arm of the catapult and igniting the ropes used in its construction.  The black smoke from the burning siege engine signaled the end of the siege as the invaders soon withdrew, looking fearfully back at the tower as long as it remained in sight.

The Wrathful Glare of the Sun

For Pathfinder:

School evocation [light, sun]; Level Clr 2, Drd 2, Sor/Wiz 2
Components V, S
Casting Time 1 action and see below
Range Medium (100 ft. + 10 ft./level)
Target One target
Duration Instantaneous
Saving Throw None but see below; Spell Resistance Yes

This spell draws upon the caster’s link with the sun to create an intense beam of focused sunlight that leaps from the caster’s hand to unerringly strike a single target.  The spell inflicts 1d8 points of damage +1d8 for each four levels of the caster (to a maximum of 6d8 at 20th level) and the target and all within 10′ of the target must make a Reflex save of be dazzled for the next round.  Undead and creatures vulnerable to sunlight suffer an additional 1 point of damage per die.  If this spell is cast at dawn or noon precisely, the caster may add their spell casting attribute modifier (if positive) to the damage it inflicts.

This spell may also be cast as a ritual, for each full minute spent performing the ritual before casting, the casters effective level is increased by 1 for all purposes when the spell is cast.  The caster may spend a maximum number of minutes equal to their spell casting attribute modifier or half their level whichever is lower (minimum 1) on the ritual.  If the ritual is disrupted the spell is lost.

For Legends of the Five Rings (4th edition):

Ring/Mastery: Fire 1 (Sun)
Range: 250′
Area of Effect: One target
Duration: Instantaneous
Raises: Damage (+1k0 per two raises)

Your prayer calls the blazing anger of the Sun, imploring the fire kami to execute her vengeance.  A ray of intense and searing light flashes from your hand to the target, dealing 5k2 Wounds and then forcing him and everyone within 5′ to make a Reflexes roll at TN 10 or be partial blinded by the intense light (and rolls involving sight take a -1k0 penalty) next round.  If this spell is cast at precisely Dawn or Noon, the damage is increased to 6k2.  As the Sun has a special hatred for the denizens of the Shadowlands, this spell inflicts +1k0 against such creatures.

This spell is harder to cast indoors or at night and the shugenja suffer a +5 TN penalty when attempting to do so (increasing to +10 during a solar eclipse).

Special: This spell may be cast as a ritual.  For each minute spent preparing the ritual, the spell gains +1k0 damage and + 50′ range, with the maximum bonus that can be gained equal to the shugenja’s Insight Rank or their Void Ring whichever is lower.  If the ritual is interrupted, the spell is lost.

A shugenja with a sacred mirror of the Sun Goddess gains a free raise when they cast this spell.

Notes: This spell was originally designed as a signature spell for my Moshi shugenja in a short lived L5R campaign.
