A Day of Memories and Rememberance

11 November, 2009

In Flanders FieldToday is Veterans Day in the United States, Armistice Day in Europe and Remembrance Day across the Commonwealth.  To all of those who gave their lives to defend us across the years, we remember and are thankful.

It always brings to my mind the haunting words of A. E. Housman’s Epitaph on an Army of Mercenaries-

These, in the day when heaven was falling,
The hour when earth’s foundations fled,
Followed their mercenary calling
And took their wages and are dead.

Their shoulders held the sky suspended;
They stood, and earth’s foundations stay;
What God abandoned, these defended,
And saved the sum of things for pay.

To those who have or will have taken up the sword to defend your country, we salute and honor you on this day.

Pax Vobiscum.
