New Monster – Leather Man

5 October, 2009

Leather Man
Not a man in leather armor but a man made of leather.  It moves quickly, a coiled whip made of its own leather held loosely in one hand.  With a creak of leather, it turns to look at you with empty eyes.

Whip Master (Ex) The leather man is treated as having the following feats when using a whip: Improved Disarm, Improved Trip, Weapon Focus (whip).
Made of Leather (Ex) The leather man’s leather must be properly maintained and oiled otherwise it becomes brittle.  A poorly maintain leather man suffer a -2 penalty to Dex and -1 Natural Armor.  Because they are leather, they may be repaired by someone with the Craft (leatherwork) as though using the Heal skill to Treat Deadly Wounds.

Leather men are one of the lesser cousins of true golems, created by spellcasters to serve as guards or soldiers. The design has been around for age but it is most widely used by Mariassa Sorrow, the ruler of the Gate City of Caracossa, who maintains a veritable army of leather men to patrol her city.  The Leather Men of Caracossa are easily recognizable by the spiral nautilus shell design upon their chest.

A leather man stands 5 to 6 feet tall and weighs 80  pounds (they are hollow). They are always equipped with a masterwork whip that grows out of their arm and usually with a secondary melee weapon. The whip can be recovered after a leather man has been defeated though a handle will have to be fitted.

Construction
A leather man is made from 100-pounds of the finest leather and thread at the cost of at least 200 gp. Assembling the body requires a DC 15 Craft (leather worker) check.
CL 9th; Craft Construct, polymorph, lesser geas, cat’s grace, caster must be at least 9th level; Price 6,000 gp; Cost 3,000 gp.

Notes: Yes, these were partly inspired by the leather men from the crazy SF movie Barbarella.  They are designed to fill a role as dangerous -but not unbeatable- construct soldiers, inexpensive enough that an evil villain can have dozens of them if needed.

  1. Actually, this would make an interesting 4th Edition D&D construct — the “poorly maintained” leather men as minions, and the well-cared-for ones as soldiers with a bit of a controller mixed in (that whip would trip nicely.)
