New Spell – Blood Weapon

7 September, 2009

Villains and evil cults need tools to make their pawns more effective against the heroes.  Here is one such spell:

After a few dark words, the priest touched his symbol to the weapon and it began to glow with a pulsing red light.  When I next attacked with it, it almost seemed to leap of its own accord to strike my enemies.

Blood Weapon
Transmutation [evil]
Level: Clr 2, Evil 1
Components: V, S, DF
Casting Time: 1 standard action
Range: Touch
Target: Weapon touched
Duration: 1 min + 1 min./level
Saving Throw: Will negates (harmless, object)
Spell Resistance: Yes (harmless, object)

Blood weapon gives a weapon a +2 enhancement bonus on damage rolls, further you gain a +2 profane bonus when rolling to confirm critical hits with the weapon.  You cannot cast this spell on a natural weapon, such as an cat’s bite (instead, see magic fang).  A monk’s unarmed strike, or the hands of anyone with the improve unarmed strike, is considered a weapon and thus can be enhanced by this spell.  This is because a person can have the intention to inflict evil while an animal cannot.

While the spell is in effect the weapon is surrounded by a faint, pulsing red aura.

Pathfinder Note: If the blood weapon is in the area of the caster’s channel energy effect, it gains a +1 profane bonus to damage the following round.

Blood Weapon, Mass
Transmutation [evil]
Level: Clr 6, Evil 5
Range close (25 ft. + 5 ft./2 levels)

Targets one creature/level, no two of which can be more than 30 ft. apart

Mass blood weapon works like blood weapon, except that it affects multiple creatures.

Blood Weapon is a variant on magic weapon trading bonus to attack for more damage on a successful attack with the bonus to confirm criticals to make up for the fact that attack bonuses are usually more useful than damage bonuses.

  1. Hey I noticed this post was tagged Pathfinder but then noticed that the spells you reference above are still 3.5. If you would like to link to Pathfinder versions of those same spells you can find them at

That’s a Pathfinder SRD site I started and am working with many others to maintain. Feel free to check it out and give any comments, either here on your blog or on my site 🙂

    Good Gaming!

    • Honestly, this is one of those perfect backwards compatablility points, where the spells are the same in both versions (OGL/PF). But thank you for the links, I will keep the Pathfinder SRD in mind for the future. Aways good to have additional resources.
