Libertas’ Pileus (hat) – New Magic Item / A to Z Blogging Challenge [L]
April 14, 2011When the army of the Night Lord Yrikal fought their way past the outer forts that guarded the passes on onto the plains of the Nevia Republic, the freed folk flocked to the local militia. Wearing their pileus, often under whatever helmets they had salvaged, they inspired the people to defend the cities, towns and villages. Having once been enslaved, they had no wish to serve again, especially not under crueler masters.
As the threat from the Night Lord’s armies increased, the ranks of the militia was swelled by more and more freed slaves. Indeed, it was the war to save the republic that ended slavery there.
Libertas’ Pileus
These items are the simple felt cap, usually red, that represent a freed slave. Empowered by the act of freeing a slave, these ideas help to protect the freedom of their owner. The Pileus is extremely tough and durable, it will survive anything except for a deliberate attempt to destroy it.
The Pileus provides its wearer with a +2 resistance bonus against mind-effecting and any ability that would bind, constrain or trap the wearer. The wearer gains a +1 moral bonus to attack those that would enslave the wearer or others. It also provides a +1 circumstance bonus to social skills with other freed slaves.
The magic of the Pileus only works for someone who has been a slave and is now freed, whether by law or their own actions.
