New Magic Item – Golem Helm

February 11, 2011

Nevin hated passing by the skull masked helms of the Lord of Exquisite Doom’s personal guard, the Doomed Ones. He could feel their flat eyes watch him pass by with such cold contempt.  He shivered.  He had seen them kill with no more emotion or reaction than a man would crush a bug, less even.

Golem Helm

These full helms are made of the finest steel, reinforced and lined with leather and cloth padding.  Most are extremely functional and almost featureless but a few are highly decorated and ornate.  They are often used by tyrants and other authoritarian leaders for their personal guards.

Once the golem helm is donned, the wearer becomes deadened to emotional effects and focused on the task at hand.  The wearer gains a +5 resistance bonus on saving throws against all mind-affecting spells and effects, a +3 competence bonus on Concentration checks and to counteract penalties due to distractions on skills requiring focus.  The wearer add their Wisdom modifier (if positive) to their Initiative checks as they are better able to analyze the situation without distraction.

However, the wearer loses the ability to understand or comprehend emotions and emotional context, suffering a -5 penalty to Charisma-based skills and Sense Motive checks.  The bonuses granted by the helm fade within a minute of removing it but the penalties persist for at least as long as the helm was worn and tends to increase with greater frequency of use.

Aura strong abjuration; CL 15th

Construction
Requirements Craft Wondrous Item, cat’s grace, mind blank, owl’s wisdom; Cost 3,750 (+300 xp for D&D)

Notes: Something to guard the guards from magical influence.  I choose the name golem helm because it makes the wearers seem like automatons.
