New Monster – Fear Fragment
October 4, 2010Three horrible apparitions, ghostly things all teeth and claws erupted from the skulls. They were fast and vicious, they carved through us until we came to our sense and saw that they were just minor spirits. Once we had banished our fears, the spirits quickly followed.
Fear Fragment
These spiritual fragments are bound by necrourgists to serve as guardians or tools. Initially, they appear quite terrifying and dangerous but as the shock wears off they are revealed as minor threats.

SPECIAL ABILITIES
Fearful Appearance (Su) The Fear Fragment taps into the fears of those that see it causing it to, at first, appear extremely terrifying. Those seeing a Fear Fragment must make a Will save (DC 18) or be shaken for 1d4 rounds plus one round for every three full points by which they failed the save. If multiple Fear Fragments are encountered, increase the save DC by 1 for each additional fragment. A person can only be effected by this fear once per hour.
The save DC is Charisma based and includes a +6 racial bonus.
Overcome by those Unafraid (Ex) Those who are not suffering from fear may inflict 1/4 damage against the Fear Fragment with non-magical weapons.
Punish the Fearful (Su) The Fear Fragment gains +2 to its attacks and improves its bite damage to 1d8 against any creature that is suffering from any fear effect.
Weakened by Daylight (Ex) Like all fears, it is simply not a scary where it is brightly lit. A fear Fragment suffers a -1 to attack rolls and its Fearful Appearance has a -4 DC if it is in direct sunlight.
What you may know about the Fear Fragment:
Knowledge (Arcana or Religion) DC 18. These creatures are created by necrourgic magic to guard and attack the enemies of the summoner.
Knowledge (Arcana or Religion) DC 25. These creatures feed off of fear and are most dangerous to those afriad.
Necrourgic Specialists and Clerics of the Death domain gain a +2 bonus to these skill checks.
TACTICS
Before Combat: The Fear Fragments swarm together and appear en mass to maximize their fearful appearance.
During Combat: They swarm the nearest target who is suffering from fear, trying to cripple them and then moving on to the next victim.
Morale: As bound undead they will attack until destroyed.
Notes: These monsters can be quite dangerous to lower level characters so be careful in such cases. They are the higher end of CR 1 (but not quite CR 2) and should usually be worth extra experience to lower level parties that over come them.
